Steel Shaft
* Steel shafts are less expensive than graphite, so the same set of clubs will cost less with steel shafts than with graphite shafts.
* Steel shafts will last forever so long as they are not bent, rusted or pitted.
*Some amateurs like the extra feedback that steel provides while many prefer as little vibration as possible. If you are prone to a lot of bad hits, your hands might be buzzing after a round with a steel shaft.

Graphite Shaft
* Graphite shafts are now as durable as steel shafts, though both have their weak points. Quality graphite shafts last a long time so long as they are not chipped or cracked, or the laminate-seal is not peeling.
* You get less vibration in your hands with graphite shafts, and more vibrations with steel shafts. It depends on how much vibration you want.
*Most important is the weight difference. Graphite shafts, and therefore graphite clubs, are much lighter than steel shafts and steel clubs.
What is Flex?
What Flex is Right For You?
* Flex is the amount of bend in a shaft, typically designated by one of five letters: L (ladies), A (senior), R (regular), S (stiff), and X (extra stiff), from most flexible to least. Swing tempo (elapsed time of your swing) and swing speed (clubhead speed at impact) are the two principal factors in determining your proper flex. If they're fast, you'll generally need a stiffer flex. If they're slower, you can play a more whippy (softer) shaft. When trying to figure their flex, most people overestimate their swing speed and tempo.* Get yours measured by professional clubfitters at Golf USA equipped with our Golf Achiever Simulator. Take your normal swing for an accurate read so that the we can offer calculated suggestions.  There are no official "average swing speed" figures available, but men typically swing drivers and fairway woods at roughly 90 mph, while most women and seniors are slower. Everyone swings their irons a little slower, as the shorter shafts make for a shorter swing arc, thus retarding the clubhead speed.
